The people of the island can be divided into more than 250 sub-groups, including the Marindanim, Yah’ray, Asmat, Mandobo, Dani, Afyat, Amungme, Bauzi, Kamoro, Kombai, Korowai, Mee, Sentani, Lani, Yei and Yali

Papua is rich in a strategic area for tourism. Many natural beauty that is created there. Starting from the Beach, Forest, Mountain, Swamp, it is still natural and not polluted as in big cities. Abepura (between Jayapura and Sentani) is the best place for ethnographic pieces and Asmat arts from the Rockefeller Foundation. Danau Sentani is one of the biggest lakes and you can cross to the Apayo island, where local people make bark paintings. For wood carvings and rock paintings, you can stop by at Doyo Lama Village. The Baliem Valley is the home of the Dani, Lani and Yali tribesmen, it takes a 45 minute flight from Jayapura. Dani and Lani are very close to each other. They have the same language, but different dialects.The Yali tribesmen live far from the two tribes in the rugged terrain. They have their own language, which is very different with the Dani or Lani. It takes a five day trek from Wamena, the one and only town in Baliem valley. The famous Asmat tribesmen live in the harsh environment on the south coast of West Papua. This etchnic group are fishermen and carvers. Asmat means street or wood people. Every year they conduct the Sago Larva feast. Recently the local government of West Papua, together the tourist office, started the yearly art and culture festival in the fisrt week of October, to support and maintain Asmat art and culture. Besides traditional dancing during the festival Asmat woodcarvings are sold.

Papua's known forest fauna includes marsupials, mammals, many bird species, the world's longest lizards (Papua monitor) and the world's largest butterflies. The island has an estimated 16,000 species of plant, 124 genera of which are endemic.

Its tropical rain forest and jungles are known to be very wild and impenetrable. Puncak Jaya or the so - called Carstenz Peak, one of the tallest peaks in the island, covered by everlasting snow and surrounded by Lorentz Reserve which is the largest conservation area in Indonesia, covering some 21.500 km².

As stunningly beautiful above water as it is below, Raja Ampat (which literally translates as “The Four Kings”) has a startling diversity of habitats to explore. The area’s reefs are covered in a diverse selection of both hard and soft corals. Most of the areas reefs are pristine, with mile after mile of perfect hard corals, drift after drift of soft corals of many species and colors ranging from brilliant red, to shocking yellow pretty pink and exotic purple. Most reef dives are very colorful. Diversity at its best, Raja Ampat is arguably the best dive site in the world.

Papua places of Interest:

Sorong
The capital of the district withSame name, located in the nose region of Papua Island's bird head. Aside from being a center of local government, Sorong also be oil and wood-processing center in this region. Area around Sorong has several interesting tourist locations such as beaches and several small islands off the coast.

Casuari Beach
A good beach for swimming or snorkeling, located not far from Sorong. Location of the beach can be reached by public transportation from the terminal Sorong.

Jefman Island
Jefman Island can be reached from Sorong with riding motorboat or ferry. The island has excellent beaches and interesting trekking route. Other islands can be visited from Sorong are Doom Island, Batanta Island, Islands Matan Island and Kafiau Island. These islands have beautiful beaches and fun locations for swimming and diving.

Manokwari
A fun city to begin exploring the Cendrawasih Bay. The town is located in Doreri located by the bay, this was the first city where the entry of Christian missionaries to West Papua. The city has a fairly complete accommodation facility, particularly pleasant and comfortable lodging located on the east side Doreri Bay. Arfak Mountains and Manokwari are famous among insect aficionado   for the unique butterfly species. Tourism office in Manokwari located in Jl Merdeka (tel. 21230) in this place, tourists can find tourist information, including if you are interested in trekking in the Arfak Mountains.

Ransiki
Located south of Manokwari is a pleasant transmigration town. Road conditions between Manokwari and Ransiki sometimes damaged and barely passable even during rainy season, but the panorama in along the way between the two cities are very impressive.

Giji and Gita Lakes
From Ransiki tourists start the hiking journey for two or three days accompany by guides to Gita and Giji Lakes which located in Arfak mountainous area at an altitude of 2.030 m above sea level that presents a very beautiful panorama. The lake has a depth of 100 feet is a good location for swimming. Population residing in this region is called by the name of Hatam and Manikom people. They live with their traditional culture. Travel to reach the lake begins by walking along the river until you reach Siwi Momi and continued with the walk up the muddy road to the lake. At night, hikers can stay at the cabins that are available along the route of travel.

Cendrawasih Bay Marine Reserve
An area of 14.300 km2 and is the largest marine reserves in Indonesia. This nature reserve covers 18 islands and coastal areas along more than 500 km the habitat of various species of birds and of course a variety of marine animals such as giant clams, turtles and dugongs.
Waters in this region has many dive sites with the natural beauty under the water that is very impressive. Travelers must obtain prior permission before leaving for the region this cagar alam. Permits can be obtained from WWF in Jl. Martadinata, Nabire. Inhabited islands in this region among other Rumberpon, Mioswaar, Roon and Angrameos. Tourists can visit the islands through Nabire or Ransaki. On the island visitors can explore the beautiful beach area.

Rumberpon Island
Tourists can snorkel in the coral reef areas with a diverse flora and fauna of the beautiful sea. Rumberspon also offers the opportunity to explore the forest on the island. Rumberpon Island can be reached from Ransiki with a two-hour speedboat ride.

Wairondi Island
From Rumberpon Island tourists can rent a motorboat to the other islands such as Pulau Wairondi, which a turtle habitat untouched by human hands, and also to the Auri Island. Pasir Putih Beach is only two kilometers from Manokwari town, with land vehicles. This is a beautiful beach with cool wind blowing, very cool for swimming or simply sunbathing.

Ambon Beach
Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and has a 2-meter-high waves make the beach very challenging to surf. Located five kilometers from Manokwari town, this beach is easily accessible by road.

Kabori Lake
Lays the beautiful panorama Kabori Lake is fun for fishing, located only 20 km from the town of Manokwari and can be reached by bike or oplet.

Pendidikan Forests
The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry University often use forests with various types of plants. Located 7 km from the town of Manokwari.

Rumah Kaki Seribu
The stage house was partly built by the Arfak tribe. This house has a unique and rare design, with a lot of support poles like millipedes. The walls are made of forest trees, its roof made of reeds. Houses for millipedes are found in some villages: Kebar and Anggi.

Meja Mountains and Monuments of Japan
The mountain that resembles a table from a distance is a reserve forest which has beautiful scenery and green, very suitable for hiking and other adventure tours. In this area there is a monument of Japan, established to mark arrival of the first Japanese troops in Papua. Located only two kilometers from Manokwari town can be reached by land vehicles and even on foot.

Maredred Waterfall
Located in Pasir Putih village with beautiful scenery, this waterfall has a diverse species of flora and fauna. Great fun for bathing. Can be reach only 10 minutes by boat from Fak-Fak town and walk around 2, 5 hours along the creek.

Tubir Seram Island
A memorial "The struggle of Red and White" into the deep background Seram Island is beautiful and filled with various types of colorful flowers. There is a mini museum that has historical value. This place can be achieved only 5 minutes by boat from Fak-Fak.

Monuments Act of Free Choice

World War II monument
Built by the Dutch in 1948 in downtown Fak-Fak, this monument commemorates the Dutch soldiers who were killed by Japanese soldiers during World War II.

Raja Ampat Islands
Composed of four major islands, namely Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati and Misool and hundreds of smaller islands. The islands are part of the expanse of ocean areas that include the Bird's Head area of Cenderawasih Bay, the largest marine national park in Indonesia.

Pendaratan Sekutu Monument
Erected to commemorate the Allied troops landing on the beach on 22 April 1944 under the leadership of General Douglas Mac Arthur.

PEPERA Monument
Built to commemorate the Declaration of Determination of the People's Opinions (Act of Free Choice) in 1969, to determine the wishes of the people of Papua to join Indonesia. Voting is conducted six years after the UN handed over Papua to Indonesia. This monument is located in APO, the first allied army post, and 500 m from downtown Jayapura.

Yos Sudarso Monument
Built to commemorate Commodore Yos Sudarso services that died in battle against the Dutch in 1962 Arafuru Sea, within the framework of the liberation of West Irian operation. This monument is located at lmbi City Park, center of Jayapura.

Hamadi Beach

Loka Budaya Museums

Base G Beach

Yamagata Monument

Mount Grasberg

Lepas Landas Monument

Gedo Beach
Located in the village Sanoba, Wahario, approximately 10 km east of the town of Nabire. This beach is visited by lots of tourists, especially on holiday. This white sandy beaches and clear water. It is suitable for swimming and soaking up the sun.

Kali Bumi Dam
Located in the Bumi village less than 20 km to the east side of Nabire. Can be reached by various kinds of vehicles. This place had river with a beautiful panorama of five large water DAM building. In addition to irrigation and power generation, dams are also developed as tourist attractions.

Nusi Island and Coast
This place has developed into the sea resorts, complete with lodging, restaurant and karaoke. There is also a speedboat if you want to cross to the Island Nusi. Nusi Beach can be reached by various kinds of vehicles, two and four-wheeled motor about two hours from the City of Nabire.

Ahe Island
There are remaining wreckage of the Japanese army during World War II. Besides viewing the carcass plane we can also walk around the island of combing the beach while enjoying the natural scenery. Can take about 2.5 hours by using the speedboat from Nabire.

Baliem Valley Festival
Held by the tribes in Wamena on August 17 to welcome the big day defined as the Tourism Event Each Year in the Valley Baliem to Support the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Republic of Indonesia.

Bakar Batu Attractions
Is a Baliem community cultural tradition. In this event displayed traditional food for tourists because it is a reality of community life indigenous (Dani tribe) in Baliem Valley Region.

Panah Babi Attractions
Shows how to hunt by using the arrows. After the arrows ravin bound to be cooked / baked in the ground commonly called burn stone or in local language called 'SNI HELEP''.

Traditional houses
This is a traditional village in Wamena with round houses and thatched walls are made from wood with no windows. Houses like this in the call honai in native languages.

Hanging Bridge
First created by traditional manner by local communities with the cable materials are now modified with steel wire material. Is a pedestrian bridge to a community in northern Baliem River. This bridge is located in the Village Wesaput 2 km from the town of Wamena and can be achieved with two-or four-wheel vehicles and on foot. The length of the bridge is approximately 90 meters.

Mummy

Noboba Island

Ansus Township
Is a village on the water on the island of Ansus. Can be taken two hours by using the speedboat to the West Serui. Transportation between residents by using small boats. There are about 100 families, schools, hydroelectric power, the Church and the Port. Japanese Cave

Monuments World War II

Bosnik Beach
